In response to the Trump Administration’s decision over the weekend to fire Rohit Chopra from his position as Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), Rise Economy CEO Paulina Gonzalez-Brito released the following statement:
“We are deeply concerned by the release of Rohit Chopra from his role as Director of the CFPB. He truly championed the interests of American families during his tenure. Under his leadership, the CFPB achieved significant milestones for working-class families, including returning billions of dollars to affected consumers, taking decisive action to reduce exploitative junk fees, and creating a strong Section 1071 rule to protect small business owners from discrimination.
“At a time when billionaires and corporate interests are consolidating their power, the CFPB must remain committed to safeguarding everyday people, not serving the powerful. Chopra’s leadership demonstrated what a consumer watchdog can and should be — relentless in its pursuit of fairness, accountability and economic justice. These qualities are precisely why our organization honored Chopra with the Equitable Futures Award in 2023.
“Rise Economy will continue working alongside a CFPB that ensures that Californians, particularly those most vulnerable to financial exploitation, are protected from harmful banking and lending practices. We remain committed to advocating for policies that dismantle systemic barriers —redlining, predatory lending and financial discrimination — that have long blocked Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) from building generational wealth. We hope that Chopra’s predecessor will be as well.
“Now more than ever, we need a CFPB that works for the people, not corporate interests. We thank Chopra for his leadership and we will continue fighting to ensure an economy that serves all communities.”
