The California Reinvestment Coalition issued the following statement Wednesday following the violent and disturbing events in Washington, D.C., where right-wing domestic terrorists stormed the U.S. Capitol as Congress was set to certify the 2020 Electoral College votes:

The California Reinvestment Coalition stands on the side of democracy. Black and Brown people led a multiracial coalition that turned out to vote in historic numbers this past November to elect Joe Biden as the next President of the United States. And on Tuesday, that coalition, led by Black women, made history in Georgia.

The domestic terrorists that violently stormed the US Capitol were incited not only by an attempt to overturn the will of the people in electing Joseph R. Biden as the next President of the United States, but they were motivated by destroying the growing multiracial coalition in this country who elected him and made history in Georgia. This is white supremacy.

The actions of that violent mob was incited by the President of the United States, and the Senators and Congressmembers who are attempting to overturn the will of the American people decided in a lawful democratic election.

We stand with Rep. Cori Bush who has drafted a resolution to expel members of congress who have incited this attempted coup by attempting to overturn the election results and Rep. Ilhan Omar’s articles of impeachment of President Trump for his role in inciting this violent attack on Congress and attempt to overturn the election.

We will continue the hard work of dismantling the systems that embolden white supremacists inside and outside the capitol, and we will continue to build people power to reimagine systems that center the needs of those who have been disenfranchised and marginalized, starting with Black, Indigenous and people of color.

In solidarity,
Team CRC
