California Reinvestment Coalition (CRC) applauds the U.S. Senate confirmation of Rep. Marcia L. Fudge as Secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Fudge was confirmed 66-34 on March 10.

“Today, more than 11 million families nationwide live in fear of eviction or foreclosure of their homes. The confirmation of Secretary Fudge is a significant step forward in the effort to ensure housing stability and homeownership opportunities for each of those families,” said CRC Executive Director Paulina Gonzalez-Brito.

“A large task awaits Secretary Fudge, as a housing crisis looms large,” Gonzalez-Brito said. “In California, particularly, there are many significant housing challenges to address, including the mass displacement of communities of color, seniors and low-income people, especially at the hands of large Wall Street, private equity and corporate landlords. But we are confident in Secretary Fudge’s ability to both rehabilitate the fair housing enforcement and policy that was significantly weakened under the Trump Administration and play a constructive role in addressing these threats to our communities by restoring and proactively enforcing rules such as the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule.

“We also look forward to HUD increasing its role as a supporter of critically-needed affordable housing development and preservation, and nonprofit housing counseling,” Gonzalez-Brito said.
