Annual event recognizes individuals, organizations in California who are making an impact on BIPOC and low-to-moderate-income communities.
SAN FRANCISCO, March 31, 2023 — The California Reinvestment Coalition (CRC), a statewide leader in housing, economic and racial justice advocacy, continues its annual tradition next month by celebrating the people and organizations that are making a positive impact in California communities with its Northern California Equitable Futures Awards. The award celebration will be held Thursday, April 27 at Oeste Bar in Oakland, Calif.
Leading game changers, difference-makers and community leaders will be recognized for their work toward creating a more just and sustainable economy in California. The honorees will receive either the Equitable Futures Award, presented to organizations whose body of work has helped redistribute wealth to people of color and working-class communities or led mobilization campaigns to create an equitable economy, or the Alan Fisher Economic Justice Award, CRC’s highest honor presented to individuals who have dedicated their lives to advocacy, echoing the work of CRC’s late founding director Alan Fisher.
This year’s theme is “Rise Up, California,” which calls on CRC’s members, allies and banking partners to work together to expand opportunities and close the racial wealth and digital equity gaps that exist for low-income and Black, Indigenous and People of color communities in California.
This year’s Northern California honorees include:
- Carol Ornelas, Chief Executive Officer of Visionary Home Builders.
- Rohit Chopra, Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Since 2008, the Equitable Futures Awards, formerly the Community Heroes Awards, have honored the likes of Executive Director of California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc Jose Padilla, the California Public Banking Alliance, SEIU California State Council, Asm. Miguel Santiago (CA D-53), Congresswoman Maxine Waters, Sen. María Elena Durazo, United Neighbors In Defense Against Displacement (UNIDAD), US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra, and Vice President Kamala Harris.
